Navigating health coverage can be confusing, especially with recent changes to provincial guidelines. As your local eye care experts in the Durham Region, we want to ensure you have the most up-to-date information for 2026 regarding your OHIP eye exam coverage.

At ERC Optometry, we believe that financial clarity is the first step toward great vision health. Here is the breakdown of what is covered by the Ontario Ministry of Health and what requires a private fee.

Who is Covered by OHIP?

In Ontario, OHIP provides coverage for major eye exams for specific age groups and those with certain medical conditions.

  1. Children and Youth (Ages 0–19)
  • Coverage: One full major eye exam every 12 months.
  • Why it matters: Vision changes rapidly during school years. Regular exams are essential for detecting issues like myopia or binocular vision problems early.
  1. Seniors (Ages 65 and Older)
  • Coverage: One full major eye exam every 18 months for healthy seniors.
  • Exception: If you have an eligible medical condition (such as glaucoma or macular degeneration), OHIP covers a major exam every 12 months.
  1. Adults (Ages 20–64) with Specific Medical Conditions

Standard eye exams for healthy adults in this age bracket are not covered by OHIP. However, if you have certain conditions, your major eye exam is covered once every 12 months.

Eligible conditions include:

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts (if they significantly impair vision)
  • Acute or Progressive Retinal Disease
  • Acute or Progressive Corneal Disease
  • Acute or Progressive Optic Pathway Disease

What Is NOT Covered by OHIP?

While OHIP covers the basic functional assessment of your vision, many specialized treatments and advanced diagnostics are considered “non-insured services.” These include:

  • Myopia Management: Programs designed to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children (such as Ortho-K, MiSight, or specialized lenses) are private services.
  • Dry Eye Testing: Specialized diagnostic testing to determine the root cause of ocular surface disease.
  • Advanced Dry Eye Treatments: In-office therapeutic treatments and procedures that treat the root cause of dry eye disease are generally not covered.
  • Advanced Diagnostic Imaging: Technologies like OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) or ultra-widefield retinal imaging that provide a deeper look at the eye’s structure.
  • Contact Lens Fittings: Evaluations and fittings for contact lenses are separate from a standard eye exam.
  • Glasses and Sunglasses: The cost of frames, lenses, and coatings.
  • Laser Eye Surgery Consultations: Most refractive surgery assessments are private.
  • Employment or Driver’s License Forms: Vision tests required specifically for a job or a Ministry of Transportation form are generally not covered.

The ERC Optometry Difference

Even if your exam is covered by OHIP, we may recommend advanced screenings to provide a more comprehensive exam. We utilize the latest technology to ensure we catch potential issues years before they affect your sight.
