Exciting News: ERC Optometry Is Bringing TriLift to Dry Eye Treatment

We’re thrilled to share something exciting that’s coming to ERC Optometry very soon — a cutting-edge dry eye treatment called TriLift by Lumenis, and we think it’s going to be a game-changer for so many of our patients.

If you’ve been struggling with dry, irritated, or uncomfortable eyes, this one’s for you.

Wait — Isn’t Dry Eye Just About Eye Drops?

It’s a common misconception! While artificial tears and eye drops can provide temporary relief, they don’t address the root cause of most dry eye cases. The majority of dry eye sufferers have a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) — a problem with the tiny oil glands along your eyelids that are responsible for keeping your tear film stable and your eyes comfortable.

When these glands become clogged or stop functioning properly, the oily layer of your tears breaks down too quickly, leading to that familiar burning, gritty, or watery sensation. Sound familiar?

Here’s where it gets really interesting: one of the biggest — and most overlooked — contributors to meibomian gland dysfunction is something that naturally happens to all of us as we age.

The Muscle Tone Connection Nobody Talks About

After the age of 30, we gradually lose tone in our facial muscles — including the muscles around the eyes that control how we blink. As the blink mechanism weakens, the eyelids don’t fully close and compress the meibomian glands with each blink the way they should. Less effective blinking means less oil expressed onto the eye’s surface, leading to clogged glands and progressive dry eye symptoms.

This is a big reason why dry eye tends to get worse with age, and it’s also why treating the glands alone often isn’t enough. You need to address the whole system — the glands and the muscles working together.

That’s exactly what TriLift does.

Introducing TriLift by Lumenis

TriLift is an innovative, in-office treatment that combines two powerful technologies in one device:

Radio Frequency (RF) — Health Canada Approved for MGD RF energy delivers controlled warmth deep into the tissue around the eyelids, liquefying the thickened oils that have clogged the meibomian glands. This allows the glands to express freely again, restoring the healthy oil layer your tears need. RF also stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin — something we’ll come back to in a moment.

Deep Muscle Stimulation (DMS) – Health Canada Approved for Evaporative Dry Eye This is what truly sets TriLift apart from other dry eye treatments on the market. DMS technology works to re-engage and strengthen the muscles responsible for your blink mechanism. With improved muscle tone and a more complete, effective blink, the meibomian glands are properly activated with every blink — the way they were always meant to work.

Why the Combination Makes All the Difference

There are other treatments out there that use radio frequency alone, and there are devices that offer muscle stimulation alone. But treating dry eye caused by both gland dysfunction and a weakened blink mechanism with only one of these technologies is a bit like fixing a flat tire while ignoring the pothole that caused it.

The dual-action approach of TriLift means we’re tackling the full picture — clearing the glands and restoring the muscle function that keeps them working properly over time. The result is more comprehensive, longer-lasting relief than either treatment can achieve on its own.

Beyond Dry Eye: Other Conditions TriLift Can Help

Because the deep muscle stimulation component of TriLift works directly on improving muscle tone and the blink mechanism, its benefits extend beyond meibomian gland dysfunction and general dry eye. For patients living with certain eyelid and facial nerve conditions, TriLift offers a genuinely exciting new avenue for support and symptom improvement.

Incomplete Blink Many people blink incompletely without even realizing it — the eyelids simply don’t travel all the way down with each blink. Over time, this leaves the lower portion of the eye chronically exposed and under-lubricated, accelerating dry eye symptoms. By strengthening the muscles involved in the blink reflex, DMS helps retrain and restore a fuller, more effective blink pattern.

Lagophthalmos Lagophthalmos is a condition where the eye cannot fully close — whether during waking hours or, more commonly, during sleep. This chronic exposure can cause significant irritation, dryness, and even corneal damage over time. The muscle-strengthening effects of TriLift’s DMS technology can help improve eyelid closure, offering meaningful relief for patients managing this condition.

Bell’s Palsy Bell’s palsy causes sudden, temporary weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles on one side of the face — often affecting the ability to blink or fully close the eye. While many patients recover over time, some are left with lingering weakness in the muscles around the eye that affects blink function long after the initial episode. Deep muscle stimulation can help support muscle re-engagement and tone in these cases, making TriLift a valuable tool in the recovery and management process.

It’s worth noting that for these conditions, TriLift is not a cure — but the improvement in muscle tone and blink function it provides can make a meaningful difference in comfort, eye protection, and quality of life.

Oh, and There’s a Bonus…

While our primary mission with TriLift is to treat dry eye and support long-term eye health, we’d be doing you a disservice if we didn’t mention the aesthetic side effects — because yes, they’re a very welcome bonus.

The radio frequency component stimulates collagen and elastin in the skin, which helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area. And because DMS improves muscle tone in the surrounding facial muscles, many patients notice a subtle lifting and firming effect as well.

Healthier eyes and refreshed-looking skin? We’ll take it. Just to be clear — the eye health benefits are always our focus, but we’re certainly not going to complain about the rest.

What to Expect

TriLift is a comfortable, non-invasive, in-office treatment with no downtime. We’ll be sharing more details about the treatment process, what to expect during your appointment, and how to book as we get closer to our official launch date in the coming weeks.
